Tutorial: Converting DSS to AudioCD.

Converting DSS to AudioCD is a Tutorial based on the testimonial of a person named Kim that I met when she asked for help in getting some recordings made with her Digital recorder. This tutorial / testimonial is in her words (published with permission); but has been slightly edited to include technical details and information of interest to the reader. At her request; we will only use her first name.

Problem:  Taping to standard cassette a digitally recorded conversation erased from the digital recorder but still stored on a hard drive.
Solution:  Use CDMaster to make the necessary file conversions to record to CD. Then pop the CD in a CD-R compatable boombox and make the tape.

Dear John,

As you know, I have an Olympus digital recorder, The model is DS-150. It's not one of their newest models, but it's still very much available on the retail market. It's usually packaged with voice recognition software. They also include their own file management software along with the necessary cabling. The downloaded recordings are stored as proprietary .dss files. But their software allows for the conversion of .dss to .wav files.  The wave files just described are mono and only 11k.

I used your CDMaster32 software to convert a file less than 74 minutes in  length from 11k .wav to 44k .wav. Then, I was able to use your software to burn the recording onto a Compact Disk.  At first, I made the mistake of burning it as a .wav file by dragging and dropping the file from my desktop to the icon for the CD-R drive.  But when I played that CD on my boombox, it made some unusual sounds.  So I returned to your program and used CDMaster to simultaneously convert the .wav file to cd audio (cda) format and burn it onto another CD. Once the file was burned onto CD in cda format, then I was able to play it in my boombox.

[Note: She was able to convert the mono, 11k wav files onto an AudioCD because CDMaster32 has a built-in CDQuality converter which automatically converts all WAV files to CD Quality [44.1KHz, Stereo, 16bit], so that it can be burnt onto an audioCD. The wav files created by the Olympus software cannot be burned onto audioCD as they are due to the "spec"/requirements of AudioCDs.]

There I could record from CD to regular cassette tape without the usual noise generated near my computer.

I was very pleased with the performance of your software.
And thank you again for your gracious help when I requested it from you at your website.

Best wishes,
Kim
