After receiving the WinbookXL, I found that Winbook didn't install the best software for this laptop. So, I thought I would share what I found:

• I dropped my WinBook XL. I have data on the HDD that I need to get. Any suggestions?
  Purchase a Mobile to Desktop IDE adapter cable so you could use any PC to read the data of your mobile Hard Drive.
  I haven't actually done this but it should work with no major problems.
• Need a new laptop case? www.caselogic.com
• Synaptics, Inc appears to be the manufacturer of the Touchpad in this laptop. Their site has updated drivers for the touchpad which activates the advanced features of the touchpad. The drivers provide scrolling, auto-movement, special clicks, and many other useful features. I highly recommend all owners of WinbookXLs visit this page for these drivers. Synaptics even provides a utility to determin if your laptop is equipped with one of their pads.
• Touchpads can be cumbersome. I purchased a Logitech USB Wheel Mouse (M-UB48) for $30 and it works very well with the laptop's built in touch pad. Enjoy full hot plugablity with the USB mouse. When you don't need it, unplug it. Need it, plug it in... All without shutting down Win98. You can use both at the same time by following these simple installation notes: (Note: Assumes you have already installed the latest Synaptics drivers from above and run Win98)
  
  1. Install the drivers that come with the USB mouse.
     • This will disable the Synaptics Touchpad drivers above.
  2. After install of the USB mouse drivers, go into Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Mouse and do properties on the PS/2 device (not the Logitech Wheel or HID mouse).
  3. Go to the Driver's tab and click the Update Driver button.
  4. Next >
  5. Display a list in specific locations. Next >
  6. Select "Synaptics PS/2 TouchPad" and click Next>.
  7. Finish

• Update your Graphics chip driver at http://developer.intel.com/design/graphics/mobilegraphics/products/65554/65554.htm. And remember to set your Refresh Rate to Optimal under Display Properties/Advanced/Adapter.
• Find replacement WinBook Laptop Batteries at http://www.batteries.com
• I have spend a lot of time tweaking this (and other) laptops. You may want to check out my Windows 95 or Windows 98 pages for other tweaks I have done on the laptop.
• Windows CHDIR is an add-on for Windows9x that allows the user the ability to rapidly move from Windows to a DOS window. The program also allows the user to copy the full path of a file to the clipboard.
